Nel 2009, Juan Pablo Macías (Messico, 1974) ha portato avanti una ricerca sul sapere e sui media anarchici, partendo da un provvedimento legale adottato ai danni di una delle più grandi biblioteche anarchiche dell’America Latina, nell’estate del 2009, a Città del Messico: sfratto con ordine di sequestro per il mancato pagamento dell’affitto. Dopo aver realizzato diverse opere intorno a questa biblioteca, Macías ha consultato archivi privati e statali e approfondito online, meditando sulla relazione tra sapere istituzionale e il sapere insurrezionale, e in un senso più ampio, tra sistemi di rappresentazione e affettività.

Con le sue azioni, gli interventi, la manipolazione di archivi e progetti editoriali, Juan Pablo Macías intende generare tensioni fra le istituzioni, la pratica artistica, e il campo sociale, allontanandosi dalla scialba semantica mediante la produzione di programmi che agiscono direttamente su corpi biologici, sociali ed economici.

Questo interesse per l’incontro tra la sfera sociale rappresentativa (che ha nella proprietà il suo centro gravitazionale), e il sapere insurrezionale o l’affettività, lo ha portato a esplorare il mutamento di emozioni ed elementi privi di forma in modelli di esistenza socialmente strutturati e legali che sanciscono le libertà degli individui e delle comunità, siano esse il libero accesso al sapere o la trasformazione dell’inchiostro in codici legalmente perseguibili, a titolo esemplificativo.

A Villa Romana, Juan Pablo Macías presenta il suo progetto editoriale WORD+MOIST PRESS (1) con il lancio del libro “The Anarchist Doctrine Accessible to All”, scritto nel 1925 da José Oiticica, filologo, poeta, anarchico nonché nonno dell’artista brasiliano Helio Oiticica.

Juan Pablo Macías propone di considerare il lavoro alla stregua di un materiale formale che, proprio come l’inchiostro, o qualsiasi altro medium, può servire da materia di lavoro a se stante. Nel caso specifico, Macías ha commissionato a Maíra das Neves e Kadija de Paula di Agência Transitiva (Rio di Janeiro, Brasile) la traduzione dal portoghese all’inglese di “The Anarchist Doctrine Accessible To All” di José Oiticica (prima traduzione in assoluto dell’autore in un’altra lingua), come materia di lavoro per pubblicare il volume inaugurale di WORD+MOIST PRESS; e per incidere su i muri de Villa Romana frammenti del testo tradotto.

Juan Pablo Macías usa queste incisioni, che ricordano le scritte dei carcerati sulle pareti della prigione o gli antichi graffiti, come un processo transazionale per negoziare le stratificazioni che compenetrano il suo lavoro. Il lavoro che, concepito come un’attività svolta in clandestinità o nell’intimità della casa, che negozia il suo tempo attraverso diverse mediazioni nell’ambito pubblico: con la istituzione, con la prassi/artificio d’arte e con il campo sociale. Di fatto questa traduzione nacque dal desiderio di Macías di leggere Oiticica, e dalla volontà di condividere con un pubblico più ampio questo impulso iniziale.

WORD+MOIST PRESS ha organizzato una tavola rotonda a Villa Romana (18–19 ottobre) dal titolo “Histories of Publishing”. Saranno presenti Maíra das Neves e Kadija de Paula di Agência Transitiva (Rio de Janeiro, Brasile), Federico Bacci (Firenze, Italia), Christopher Jones di 56a infoshop (Londra, Gran Bretagna), Massimo Mazzone (Roma, Italia) e Dott. Nicholas Thoburn (Manchester, Gran Bretagna).

“Histories of Publishing” è un evento parallelo a WORD+MOIST PRESS, che si terrà presso il Padiglione nel giardino di Villa Romana. Macías ha invitato diverse persone a riflettere sul concetto di storia dell’editoria contribuendo con film, video, performance o talks. I partecipanti avranno libertà di proposta: alcuni trattando da un punto di vista giuridico il copyright e la sua storia, il copyleft e i creative commons, altri proponendo una lettura più soggettiva guardando ad alcuni temi: libri d’artista, nuovi media, editoria indipendente, bibliografia, il patrimonio culturale in Internet, la diffusione delle idee, ecc.

Maíra das Neves e Kadija de Paula sono artiste e traduttrici di Agência Transitiva, uno “space-vehicle” a Rio de Janeiro per le azioni e gli studi non convenzionali su arte, politica e storia delle idee.

Federico Bacci ha un passato che spesso ritorna. È stato regista cinematografico, documentarista, sceneggiatore e autore radiofonico. Dal 2009, insieme a Lucia Giardino è curatore di GuilmiArtProject, un programma di residenze in Abruzzo.

Christopher Jones fa parte del 56a Infoshop radical social centre a Londra ed è membro del gruppo di attivisti politici e sound artist Ultra-red.

Massimo Mazzone è artista e attivista. Porta avanti una ricerca basata sui rapporti storici tra corpo, scultura e architettura, ovvero sulla scultura sociale. Egli è il portavoce del gruppo internazionale di studio Escuela Moderna/Ateneo Libertario.

Dott. Nicholas Thoburn ha all’attivo pubblicazioni sull’estetica dei media, teoria culturale e politica. È autore del libro “Deleuze, Marx and Politics” e di “Anti-Book: Material Text and the Art of Political Publishing” di prossima pubblicazione. È docente di Sociologia presso l’Università di Manchester.

Juan Pablo Macías has carried since 2009 a research on anarchist knowledge and media, departing from a legal situation that surrounded one of the largest anarchist libraries in Latin America, evicted with a seizure order for back rent in the summer of 2009 in Mexico City. After several works around this library, he has been researching papers, state and private archives, the Internet, pondering on the relation between power knowledge and insurrectional knowledge, and in a broader sense, between systems of representation and affectivity.

This interest in the encounter of the social representational realm (property being its gravitational center), and insurrectional knowledge or affectivity, has taken him to question the transformation of formless affections or elements, into socially structured and legal forms of existence that determine the liberties of individuals and communities, be it the free access to knowledge, or the becoming of ink into codes susceptible of lawful punishment, for an example.

In Villa Romana he is making the formal presentation of his editorial project WORD+MOIST PRESS(1) which launches its first volume “The Anarchist Doctrine Accessible to All”, written in 1925 by José Oiticica – philologist, poet, anarchist and grandfather of the Brazilian artist Helio Oiticica.

Macías’ proposal consists in recognizing labor as a formal material that serves as any other media, ink for an example, to use as labor material for itself. In this case, he has commissioned the translation from Portuguese to English of “The Anarchist Doctrine Accessible to All” (the first translation of this author to any other language), to Maíra das Neves and Kadija de Paula, members of Agência Transitiva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), as the material element for publishing the inaugural volume of WORD+MOIST PRESS, and for inscribing the translated text directly onto the walls of Villa Romana using a hard tip object.

These inscriptions on the wall – that recall prison writings or old graffiti – serve as the transactional process by which Macías negotiates the different layers that traverse his labor. Labor, understood as an activity realized in the clandestinity or intimacy of the house, that negotiates its time with different outcomes in the public realm: the institution, art practice/artifices, the social field. Actually, this translation is born out of his desire of reading Oiticica, and consequently, of creating a broader circulation for this initial desire.

WORD+MOIST PRESS programmed a weekend of talks called “Histories of Publishing” with Maíra das Neves and Kadija de Paula from Agência Transitiva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Federico Bacci (Florence, Italy), Christopher Jones from 56a infoshop (London, United Kindom), Massimo Mazzone (Rome, Italy) and Dr. Nicholas Thoburn (Manchester, United Kingdom).

The work of Juan Pablo Macías (Mexico, 1974), explores the relation between systems of representation and affectivity, and analogically, between power knowledge and insurrectional knowledge. With his actions, interventions, work on archives and editorial projects, he intends to cause tensions between institution, art practice and social field, abandoning flat semantics by producing programs that operate directly on the biological, social and economic bodies. His work has been shown in major art museums in Mexico and around the world.

“Histories of Publishing” is an event parallel to WORD+MOIST PRESS, taking place at the Pavilion in the Villa’s garden. Macías invited several people to contribute freely with film, video, performance or talks, to ponder on the notion of histories of publishing. The contributors will have liberty of proposal; as an example, talking from a legal perspective about copyright and the history of copyright, or about copyleft, creative commons; others a more subjective approach talking about artist’s books, new media, autonomous publishing, bibliography, what is a book, cultural patrimony on Internet, disseminating ideas, etc.

Maíra das Neves and Kadija de Paula are artists and agents at Agência Transitiva, a space-vehicle in Rio de Janeiro for actions and non-conventional studies in art, politics, and history of ideas.

Federico Bacci has a past that often comes back. He has been cinema director, documentary filmmaker, screenwriter and radio author. Since 2009, along with Lucia Giardino he curates GuilmiArtProject, a residency program in Abruzzo.

Christopher Jones is part of the 56a infoshop radical social centre in London and a member of the political sound art group Ultra-red.

Massimo Mazzone is an artist and activist. He carries on a research based on the historic relations between body, sculpture and architecture; namely social sculpture. He is spokesman of the international study group Escuela Moderna/Ateneo Libertario.

Dr. Nicholas Thoburn has published on media aesthetics, cultural theory, and politics. He is author of “Deleuze, Marx and Politics” and the forthcoming Anti-Book: Material Text and the Art of Political Publishing. He lectures in Sociology at the University of Manchester.
